  • Not necessarily and not to get started.

Once you have completed our New Patient intake we will let you know if you need a referral from your family GP.

You will not need a referral if your child’s first appointment is  organised with one of our specialist GPs, nurses or physiotherapists.

Our GPs specialise in care for infants, children and teenagers.  You don’t need a referral to see them.

If your child’s first appointment at Paediatric People is with a paediatrician, then we do require a referral from your family GP so you can receive a Medicare rebate – we will let you know if this is the case.

We try to make the process as easy as possible for families.

If you have any questions, please Contact Us and we will be happy to assist you.

  • An intake assessment can be an important first step in your child’s care journey. It allows us to form a comprehensive picture of your child’s health and developmental needs.

We will explore your child’s medical history, developmental milestones, existing conditions and previous assessments and reports.

By taking the time to understand the full context of your child’s needs, we can ensure their care is tailored, coordinated and effective.

This process also maximises the value of your child’s follow-up consultations, allowing for a more focused and productive appointment.

The intake assessment may be with a nurse or GP.

  • In Australia, a medical diagnosis for Autism and ADHD is made by a paediatrician or psychiatrist. This is necessary to exclude possible medical causes, discuss treatment plans and consider medication options.

We will carefully review and consider any information or reports from your allied health team, and combine this with history and our own findings to best understand your child.

If we confirm a diagnosis, we will then talk to you about treatment approaches and consider ways to best support your child.

  • A developmental assessment is a thorough evaluation of your child’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development.

Your first appointment is typically with our specialist GP  who uses  a combination of history, observations, questionnaires, and diagnostic tools to identify any potential concerns and create a tailored plan to support your child’s development.

  • In case of an emergency or urgent medical concern,  please contact your nearest hospital emergency department or call 000.

For non-urgent advice, please contact us so we can organise an appointment for your child. To provide your child with safe medical care, we appreciate your understanding that we cannot provide clinical advice via email.

  • At Paediatric People we recognise our patients come from a variety of family structures.

    Medical appointments
At Paediatric People, we are committed to providing safe, ethical, and legally appropriate care to all children. When parents are separated, it is essential that we have a clear understanding of parental responsibility and consent to ensure we are meeting our legal and professional obligations.

    Shared parental responsibility
Under Australian family law, we understand that both parents are generally considered to have shared parental responsibility unless a court order states otherwise. This means that both parents should be involved in major long-term decisions affecting their child’s health and wellbeing, including medical treatment and the commencement of any medication.

    Consent for paediatric appointments

    • We request that both parents are informed of, and agree to, their child attending appointments.

    • When booking an initial appointment, we ask the parent or guardian to confirm they have shared this information with the other parent and that there is no court order restricting medical decision-making.

    • If there are Parenting Ordersor court documents, we ask that these be provided prior to the appointment to ensure we are working within the appropriate legal framework.

    Consent for commencing medication

    • If our clinician recommends medication, informed consent must be obtained.

    • We will assume the attending parent will communicate with the other parent to provide information necessary for consent. Alternatively, we are happy to organise a separate appointment for both parents.

    • Where both parents share responsibility, written or verbal consent from both parents is typically required prior to initiating medication.

    • In cases where one parent has sole medical decision-making authority as specified by a court order, we require documentation confirming this.

    • If agreement between parents cannot be reached, we may need to defer treatment and recommend legal resolution before proceeding, in line with professional guidelines and ethical standards.

  • Research consistently shows when nurses fully utilise their skills health outcomes improve.

At Paediatric People, we are proud to embrace this evidence-based approach by offering dedicated nursing services and nurse-led clinics.

Our experienced nurse plays a crucial role in delivering holistic, child-focused care that complements and supports the clinic.

This collaborative model not only improves access to services but also ensures continuity of care and better health outcomes for children and their families.

  • Some clinicians utilise AI software. At Paediatric People, we use Lyrebird Health.

Lyrebird Health is a medical scribe tool to help health practitioners record accurate clinical notes during a patient consultation.

Lyrebird Health listens in the background, capturing only the relevant details relating to clinical documentation requirements. These details are then transcribed into text and sent to your health practitioner’s Electronic Medical Record system.

Here’s what you need to know:

Transcription is performed exclusively within Australia. The audio file is immediately destroyed post-transcription. Transcription is redacted of sensitive, personal identifying information and is encrypted – it is not stored in its original form. Only your health practitioner can access this content.
At the discretion of the practitioner, data may be stored temporarily in Lyrebird.
